Online shopping has gained another AI preview: ChatGPT users can now see how clothes and accessories might look on their own photos. OpenAI is also adding a way to save products for later, though users may want to check their privacy settings before uploading a picture of themselves.
How virtual try-on works
A new Try On button appears in ChatGPT’s shopping results. Users can upload a selfie or a full-body photo, then preview an item on themselves. They can also provide an image of something they found elsewhere, such as a screenshot of a product listing.
The feature uses ChatGPT Images 2.5. OpenAI says the model produces more natural lighting and richer textures, follows editing instructions more reliably, and generates images with less delay. Those are the company’s claims about the image system, not a guarantee that a preview will settle the eternal question of whether something actually fits.
ChatGPT can also help users build a look from a style description or search for purchasable items seen in a celebrity’s outfit. That puts the assistant into fashion discovery, a category where Google and Pinterest have long helped people find inspiration and products.
Save products for later
The second feature, Favorites, lets users save products to a Library in the app. Saved items sit alongside try-on images, so users can return to both the product and its preview later.
OpenAI announced a global launch of the two shopping features. The company has been testing ways to make ChatGPT useful for shopping after an earlier instant-checkout feature failed to perform well. Getting people to ask an assistant for product help is one challenge. Becoming their preferred place to discover what to buy is another, particularly with Google already offering virtual try-on.
Check the image setting
Images uploaded from personal accounts may be used to train OpenAI’s models by default unless users turn that option off. Anyone considering uploading personal photos for a try-on should review the account’s data settings first.
The new tools make ChatGPT a more active shopping companion, from finding an outfit to saving items and previewing them. The preview may be generated by AI, but the decision about what goes in the wardrobe remains stubbornly human.
